Have you got something to say?

I’ve been wasting using up all my good stuff on Kit’s blog, so I am here, republishing it with the express written permission of the author.

In response to a post about never having to deal with Samba (hint: a network protocol to interface Windows with other machines) ever again

Samba and I aren’t talking.

Sure it was fine just having it’s select few friends, Linux and Windows, but it was time for me to move on. Linux went his way and there’s a new gal on the scene. Her name is Macintosh. Samba doesn’t get along well with Macintosh, and prefers to hang around with Windows in the kitchen. I try to ignore the fact they don’t get along, but it’s very uncomfortable for Macintosh. You know, in social situations.

I’ve brought in a mediator for some counselling. The funny thing about Dr. FTP is that he is starting to become one of us. Even Windows likes him. Samba’s got the shits, I can tell.

In response to a post about buying all music from iTunes Music Store (don’t worry, this ones less techie)

For me, nothing makes me wet myself quite like a knock from the bearded man deliverying an almost novelty-like oversized box for one CD with the big letters Amazon.com posted on the side.

I slice through the semi-gloss white shipping notice stuck on top, fold back the flaps, tear through the clear plastic that binds the CD to the superfluous extra piece of cardboard, throw the invoice to the floor and hold that crinkle covered jewel case in my hands and smell it.

23 minutes later, once I’ve gotten through the comically difficult outer wrap, and then the insane seal over the top, I open it wide to reveal the hidden disc art and let the loose record label advertising slips fall all over me.

iTunes can’t give me that.

Well then I suppose it’s my moral duty to reply here with what I said there:

It’s hard to be sympathetic toward samba, considering how often she has tantrums; often without any prior warning. Everything is going swimmingly, then kerplow, I’m not interested in this task anymore, let’s do something else.

I’m glad you found Dr FTP helpful. I know my brother used to find his insight into the situation priceless while he used WIndows. But once you’ve had AFP, FTP goes the way of samba.
Which is a shame because samba could be oh so useful if it would just behave itself.

    and

I fully appreciate the ritual of opening a new CD and reading the liner notes as it’s ripping into iTunes.

But there’s something extra special about not having to do the ripping; and about having cheap and instant satisfaction.

Not to mention there are plenty of CDs I’ve found on iTunes (Aussie ones mostly) which you just plain can’t find on Amazon.

    respectively.
